Dipayan Biswas, professor of marketing and business at the University of South Florida, told CNN that “it’s a relatively new phenomenon” that he sees going mainstream. Biswas, who has studied tipping for a decade, said the new trend started with the boom in digital kiosks. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, along with inflation, prompting companies to allow tipping to make jobs more lucrative. “Like I’m sick of tipping, right? So it’s my biggest concern that this might actually affect the industry where it really matters most,” Biswas said. Etiquette expert Thomas P.
